Onam, the harvest festival of Kerela is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Chingam, which corresponds to the month of August or September. The beauty of the Pookalams (floral decorations), the melody of the Onappattu (onam songs), the grace of Kaikottikalli (traditional dance) and the enthusiasm of the Vallam Kali (boat race) characterize the celebrations of this festival. The festival commemorates the golden era of King Mahabali, in whose rule Kerela flourished and prospered. It is believed that on this auspicious day the generous King visits his Kingdom and his subjects. Want to know more about this festival, the rituals and the legends? Come, let us take you to God’s own country to witness the celebrations of Onam.
